The Family Trends

Hey guys Jacob Todd here and I will be posting about families. Now the topics that I want to discuss is The Trends that we are seeing with the family. So, I watched a video called “The New Economic Reality: Demographic winter”.  There It talked about How the birth rates in the last 50 years have dropped considerably. That because of this unless something is done then we will soon see the consequences. To start this, we will have to look at the end of World War 2. There at that time when the soldiers came home was known as the baby boom. We don’t know why this came to be, but we know that it did. Now though the world is very different than in the 20th century. Many changes that happened in the 20th century somewhat contribute to where we are now. That is the fertility rate of women has gone down considerably in the last 50 years. Not just in the United States but all over the world. Now when I say fertility, I mean how many children a women will have in her lifetime. Now the average women get between 2 and three kids. Now a couple of generations ago that number was considerably higher. There are many reasons for this. First, I would say that after women finally got the right to vote and break the social norm of being a housewife and take care of the kids. Now lots of women and even lots of men look toward what the world would say about what success looks like. Get a degree and get a good paying job. Therefore, people don’t think about marriage but instead first look towards a career. And if people wanted to get married in life, they postpone it because they think about getting a degree first then marriage. Lots of people will say that they regretted that decision. Because even if you wanted to have Kids you have something that has taken a priority and so you will be late to have children. Second is the fact that a man went and wrote a book called “population Bomb”. Now he wrote it because there he saw too many people in India and concluded that unless something is done. We will find ourselves in an overpopulated world where there isn’t enough food to sustain it. This did a good job of creating fear about having a family back during the late 20th century. Not only that but even the media depicts that you don’t need a family to be happy or need to be committed to another person. I think because of this it leads to many cases where there’s homes where there aren’t two parents to raise kids. Now how is all this bad. Well soon in the future we will have more old people who are getting retired and not enough young people to fill in the holes in the work force. And because more and more people are having less kids. Many kids are becoming less social because they don’t have siblings to hang around with at the home (there are other factors that play a role in that. All these things contribute to the declining of humanity’s population. Did you know that there are countries that realize that they need babies in order to survive? An example is China there used to have a child limit per family. 1 child per family and it was culture that a boy was better than having a girl. Now they are in a pickle because they have way too many men vs women and not a lot of kids are born. Now a family can receive benefits for having more children. Even still with the encouragement it hasn’t really affected the fertility rate in China or a lot of other countries where they are enchanting such laws. It is my hope that this enlightens you to think what family means to you. That you see that families are an important social unit in society. That without them we will become fall having not relation and no place to call home.
